A young girl named Lucille Shirpser is identified here as the mascot of the San Francisco Islam Band, a musical unit linked to a city fraternal organization. The National Photo Company, which recorded San Francisco and many other American places in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and the date of about 1923 is inferred from other negatives in the same range rather than confirmed. Fraternal bands of this kind often marched in parades and public events, where a mascot would have added a lighthearted, visual presence. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the gradual decay of its original coating over time.
