Julian Scott's *Sold* shows a slave auction, a subject far removed from the battlefield scenes that dominate most Civil War art. Scott had served as a Union soldier and later became a painter of the war, and this work, first painted in 1872, reflects his interest in the conflict's human costs. The color chromolithograph made about a year later brought the image to a wider audience, and its inclusion among Civil War subjects reminds viewers that the war was fought over slavery and its aftermath.
