Three Brothers is a trio of granite summits on the south wall of Yosemite Valley, and this front view turns the formation toward the camera so its stacked peaks and the dark trees at their base stand out. The picture dates from about 1865, around the time Congress set aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Trees for public use in 1864, which drew surveyors, tourists and photographers to the valley. Made as a mammoth plate, the print is large enough to show fine detail in the rock and foliage, and its albumen surface reflects the slow, deliberate craft of early landscape photography.
