Three Brothers rises from the south wall of Yosemite Valley as a stacked group of granite summits, and this front view sets them above a dense band of conifers. Made around 1865, the albumen print dates from just after Congress granted the valley and the Mariposa Grove to California for protection in 1864, when photographers were hauling large mammoth-plate cameras into the valley to show a public that had never seen its cliffs and waterfalls. The big negative keeps the trees in the foreground distinct, so the viewer can see the individual shapes of the forest as well as the rock above it.
