Three Brothers is a granite formation on the south wall of Yosemite Valley, where three stacked domes rise abruptly above the Merced River. Its name and stepped profile make it one of the valley's most recognizable landmarks. This albumen print is a mammoth-plate view, a large-format negative that let photographers of the 1860s capture fine detail in cliffs, water, and trees. The "No. 2" in its notes suggests it was one of a numbered series, a common way photographers in the period sold views of the valley to a public eager to see the wonders of California's new state park.
