Sentinel Rock is a sheer granite face that rises above the valley floor on the south side of Yosemite Valley, and this print captures its profile as it stands watch over the meadows below. By the early 1920s, Yosemite had been a national park for about three decades, and its cliffs and waterfalls had drawn generations of painters and photographers who sought to present the valley's scale to people who would never see it firsthand. This gelatin silver print comes from the Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras portfolio, a set of views made to showcase the Sierra Nevada's landscapes.
