Passengers crowd the steerage deck of an ocean steamer as it passes the Statue of Liberty in this wood engraving, made from a staff artist's sketch and published across two pages of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on July 2, 1887. The statue had been dedicated less than a year earlier, in October 1886, and for many people traveling in steerage it was their first sight of New York. Castle Garden at the Battery was then the main depot where arriving immigrants were processed before they entered the city.
