Few details survive for this view, and the title, "Immigrant boat," comes from unverified notes written by the Bain News Service. The image is a glass negative, a format the agency used for news pictures in the early twentieth century, when steamships carried millions of European arrivals to New York Harbor. Those passengers were usually inspected at Ellis Island, which opened in 1892, so the scene likely belongs to the decades of heavy immigration that followed. The collection's documentation does not name the vessel, the date, or the photographer, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of that busy migration era.
