The only identifying detail this negative carries is its title, "Cox," which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card without a verified date or sitter. George Grantham Bain founded his New York agency around 1900, and it sold news pictures to newspapers and magazines, so its glass negatives cover a wide range of public figures, events and street scenes. Because the title is unconfirmed, "Cox" is best treated as a lead for research rather than a settled identification, and the glass plate format itself suggests the years before film became standard in press work.
