Recorded only as "Olympic athletes," this glass negative does not name the competitors, the event, or the year, so its title comes from unverified caption information the Bain News Service attached to the plate. George Grantham Bain's agency, begun in New York around 1900, sold news pictures to newspapers and magazines, and its glass negatives document the growing public appetite for sports photography in the early twentieth century. The modern Olympic Games were then only a few decades old, and athletes of that period often wore clothing and carried equipment that now look strikingly formal. Comparing the image with other Bain plates from the same era may help narrow down when and where it was made.
