Its slogan, "Treat 'em rough!", sets this recruiting poster apart from the many wartime calls to enlist by promising a chance at fast, hard-hitting action in a new kind of machine. Sgt. Henry E. Clark drew it in 1917, when the United States was building its first tank units. Recruits trained at Camp Colt in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, before American tanks went to France. Strips of additional text were pasted onto the poster in two pieces, explaining the program and where to report.
