Little is recorded about the performer billed here as Hennessy Leroyle, but this 1898 black-and-white lithograph shows how a touring comedian was marketed to the public. It was issued under the Russell-Morgan Print imprint, a printer that produced theatrical posters for traveling companies. Sheets like this were typically pasted on billboards and storefront windows along the touring circuit, where large lettering and a bold central image carried the advertising. The poster is a useful example of how American commercial printing shaped popular theater in the years before film took over.
