A mezzotint after a painting by William Owen, this print is titled for "William Pitt, Earl of Chatham," but its subject heading and 1799 date point to Pitt's son, William Pitt the Younger, who served as prime minister from 1783 to 1801 and again from 1804 until his death in 1806. The Chatham earldom belonged to the elder Pitt, a source of easy confusion between the two men. Mezzotint let engravers such as H.S. Goed reproduce the soft tonal shading of an oil portrait, which made plates like this one popular for sale in Britain.
