Thomas Hutchins, a surveyor who later served as Geographer of the United States, drew this engraved map to trace Col. Henry Bouquet's march from Fort Pitt to the forts on the Muskingum River in 1764. It shows the Ohio and Muskingum country and marks the Indian towns in relation to the army's route. The map was printed in 1765 as an illustration for an account of the campaign, which followed the 1763 defeat of the Ohio Indians at Bushy Run and aimed to force the return of captives taken during Pontiac's War. Its careful depiction of the frontier gives a clear view of the geography behind that campaign.
