Davis Island Dam, on the Ohio River a few miles below downtown Pittsburgh, is the subject of this view, and the "plate no. 1" in its title suggests it was one of a numbered series of documentary views of the structure. The dam belongs to the federal effort in the early twentieth century to canalize the Ohio with a series of locks and dams, which held the water at navigable depths for coal barges and other river freight. Its pool stretches upstream toward the city, so the dam shaped how the river worked for the mills and rail yards along its banks. Engineering photographs like this one often record the concrete, gates, and machinery as much as the landscape, which makes them useful for seeing how the works were built.
