This view shows a town square in Camagüey, a city in central Cuba whose streets were laid out in the 16th century and still follow a winding, irregular plan. The record gives only the place name and a date range of roughly 1895 to 1920, so the photographer and the exact plaza are not identified. The years span the Spanish-American War, the American occupation that followed, and the early Cuban republic, a period when photographers often recorded colonial-era towns for travelers and for the new administrations. Such images are useful for seeing how the plazas and their surrounding buildings looked before later changes.
