A steamer named Santa Anna is shown under way in this glass negative, which the Bain News Service dated August 8, 1914. The Bain agency sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines, so pictures like this were made to be printed and published quickly. The ship's name and date come from the agency's caption cards and have not been independently verified, so they reflect Bain's own record. The picture was taken in the first days after war broke out in Europe, when shipping and sea travel were often in the news.
