The German title, "Bauern, tut eure Pflicht! Die Städte hungern," reads "Farmers, do your duty! The cities are starving," an appeal aimed directly at rural producers rather than a general call to patriotism. Urban Germany faced severe food shortages during the war, and in 1919 the Allied blockade still limited imports while the hunger of the previous winters was fresh. Posters like this one tried to shift responsibility onto farmers, who were often accused of holding back grain, milk and livestock instead of sending them to city markets. The appeal shows how closely food had become tied to loyalty and civic duty on the home front.
