Currier & Ives produced "Pleasures of the Country: Sweet Home" as one of their rural idyll lithographs, a genre the firm turned out in large numbers during the 1860s and 1870s. The print presents a domestic countryside scene in the sentimental manner that made the company's images popular in American parlors and general stores alike. Its catalog entry, number 5216 in the Gale Research raisonne, places it among the firm's many pastoral subjects of the late 1860s. Such prints were made by hand-drawn stone lithography and were sold cheaply, so they reached a broad middle-class audience eager for images of home and the rural life many Americans were leaving behind.
