Henry Ware Lawton, a general who had served in the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War, is shown here lying in state, a scene rarely recorded so openly for a soldier who died in the field. He was killed in December 1899 during the Philippine-American War, when American forces were putting down the independence movement that had turned against U.S. rule. The photograph comes from an album of images from his Philippine campaign, and photographer William Dinwiddie appears to have documented the general's final months. The caption card is old and unverified, so the exact setting should be read with some caution.
