The record gives the title as "Roosevelt at home," a label the Bain News Service used on its caption cards, but it does not say which residence or occasion the picture shows. In 1912 Theodore Roosevelt was a former president running for office again as the Progressive Party candidate, and his family estate at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, New York, was where he often retreated from the campaign trail. The Bain agency, based in New York, supplied newspapers with photographs of public figures, and its glass negatives remain a useful record of the period's news photography.
