Roosevelt is shown mounted on horseback during a 60-mile ride between Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyoming, a stretch of high plains country that suited his lifelong love of riding. He had spent time as a rancher in the Dakota Territory in the 1880s and was known as an accomplished horseman, so a long ride on the open range fit the image he cultivated as a vigorous outdoorsman. The stereograph was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold paired photographs viewed through a stereoscope, a popular home entertainment of the early 1900s.
