Titled *Conversation*, this color woodcut by Hermann Max Pechstein is signed and dated in pencil, though the date is unrecorded and the details here come from an older caption card. Pechstein, born in 1881 in Zwickau, Saxony, helped found the Dresden artists' group Die Brücke in 1905 with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and others. The group prized the woodcut for its bold outlines, flat fields of strong color, and direct, rough cutting, drawing on folk art and non-European sculpture. Pechstein's prints are among the clearest examples of German Expressionism's break from academic naturalism.
