The title places this view at the top of the Palisades, 435 miles from Sacramento, where a Native American onlooker watches a train pass through the Nevada country along the Humboldt River. The card comes from the Golden State Photographic Gallery in Sacramento and was probably issued between 1865 and 1869, while the Central Pacific was pushing its track east across the Sierra and the Great Basin toward the transcontinental junction at Promontory. Stereographs like this one were sold widely to an eastern audience curious about the new railroad, and the figure at the edge of the scene reminds viewers that the line crossed lands long occupied by Native peoples.
