Set on a rise above the Palisades, along the Humboldt River in Nevada, this stereograph shows a Native American figure looking down at the newly laid Central Pacific tracks, with the caption noting the spot lies 435 miles from Sacramento. The Central Pacific pushed east through this country in the mid-1860s, and the rail line brought surveyors, workers and outsiders into lands long used by Shoshone and other Native peoples. Sacramento's Golden State Photographic Gallery issued the view as part of a numbered series on the Humboldt route, and such cards were sold to a public eager to see the new transcontinental railroad.
