Quantico, Virginia, was a Marine Corps base by the 1920s, and this glass negative is titled as a view of maneuvers there. That title was written on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, and the 1924 date is an estimate based on other negatives in the same range. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded government, military and city life in the early twentieth century, made the plate. Its glass negatives often show streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coatings, so the marks on this one are worth noticing as signs of its age.
