Pawtucket and Central Falls, lying on either side of the Blackstone River in 1877, were among the most heavily industrialized places in New England. Water pouring over the falls powered cotton mills, machine shops, and dye works, and the river valley had been the cradle of American textile manufacturing since Samuel Slater's mill began operating in Pawtucket in 1793. The local economy was still recovering from the depression that followed the Panic of 1873, when many mill hands faced short hours and wage cuts. Railroad lines and the old Blackstone Canal route tied the mills to Providence and to markets farther west. Residents of both villages would have known the place first as a working river town, where the sound of looms and the smoke of boilers marked the day.
