Newport, Rhode Island, in 1878 was shifting from a port of merchant ships to a resort for summer visitors. The colonial shipping trade had long since faded from its wharves, and each season wealthy families from New York, Philadelphia, and the South arrived to stay at hotels such as the Ocean House or in rented houses along the bluffs. A rail link to the mainland had made the trip easier, and new summer villas were going up on avenues overlooking the water. On Goat Island, the federal torpedo station, established in 1869, gave the harbor a working naval presence. Townspeople knew their city for its regattas, parades, and hotel dinners as much as for its old waterfront.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Newport, Rhode Island, drawn in 1878. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
