A weathered wooden mill, its waterwheel turning above a still pond, stands along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the scenic road that winds through the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. Mills like this were once busy centers of rural Appalachian life, grinding corn and wheat for neighboring farms with power from a dammed stream. The parkway was built beginning in the 1930s, and its designers valued older rustic structures as part of the road's character. Today the mill's reflection in the water is a scene many travelers stop to see.
