Stone-faced bridges like this one, set over rock outcrops in a wooded gorge, are a hallmark of the Blue Ridge Parkway's rustic design. Construction began in 1935 and the road was not finished until 1987, so its structures reflect the Depression-era aim of blending roadwork into the mountain landscape. Crews, many from New Deal relief programs such as the Civilian Conservation Corps, laid the local stone by hand, giving each span a weathered, natural look. In black and white, the contrast between the masonry, the rock, and the dark trees shows how the builders worked with the terrain rather than against it.
