In 1926, the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore sent a letter informing an applicant that it did not accept colored students, and this photographic print preserves that refusal in the institution's own words. Peabody was one of the city's best-known music schools, and it kept Black musicians out during an era when segregation was the norm across Maryland. The NAACP collected letters like this one as evidence in its campaign against racial barriers in education. The print is a copy held within the association's records at the Library of Congress.
