Baltimore's harbor, shown here on a stereo card, was one of the busiest working waterfronts on the Chesapeake Bay. The two nearly identical photographs were meant to be viewed together in a stereoscope, which fused them into a single three-dimensional scene. The card is credited to Bell & Bro., and its date of about 1870 comes from an unverified caption card. Stereographs like this were sold widely in the late nineteenth century, so the view offers a sense of the port as armchair travelers of the period would have encountered it.
