This Montreal lithograph, printed in 1918, pairs a call to buy Victory Bonds with images of drowning at sea in the North Atlantic. Its title, "Kulture vs. humanity," draws on the Allied wartime use of "Kulture" to describe German militarism, and the scene reflects the German submarine campaign that sank merchant and passenger ships along Atlantic shipping lanes. Canada's Victory Loan drives of 1917 to 1919 asked citizens to finance the war effort, and posters like this one argued that lending money to the government was a way of answering those attacks.
