Pistchal's "Sew for Victory" is a 1941 silkscreen poster that turns the sewing machine into a wartime tool, tying the everyday work of stitching clothing to the national war effort. It was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that employed artists to make public posters, and it is one of the collection's images focused on New York City's home-front labor. Before the United States entered the war in December 1941, many Americans were already sewing garments, bandages and supplies for Britain and other Allies, and posters like this one encouraged that civilian effort. Look closely at how the flat color blocks and bold shapes of silkscreen were used to make a routine domestic task feel urgent.
