Few wartime appeals were as blunt as this 1941 silkscreen poster, which lists the materials Philadelphians were asked to hand over in a single line: metals, paper, rubber and rags. It was approved and released by the Philadelphia Council of Defense for the city's Salvage Committee, and the Federal Art Project produced it under the Works Progress Administration. Before the United States entered the war in December 1941, local defense groups ran scrap drives like this one to gather raw materials for industry, and the poster's short slogan reflects that urgent, practical push. It is part of the Library of Congress's WPA poster collection.
