Among the many street and trade pictures in the National Photo Company Collection, this glass negative stands out for its subject: a man working an organ grinder, the hand-cranked barrel organ once common on American city sidewalks. The record dates the image only to a span between 1909 and 1940, and its title comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, which the Library of Congress has not verified. The company, active in Washington, D.C., made large numbers of documentary views in those decades, and the glass plate format reflects the commercial photography of that era. Visible streaks and blemishes are a result of the coatings breaking down over time.
