Inside this railway car, mail clerks sorted letters and parcels while the train was moving, so the mail could be ready for delivery before the train reached its next stop. The Railway Post Office system dated to the 1860s and had become a central part of how the United States moved mail across the country by the early twentieth century. This picture is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a firm that photographed American life and industry in the early 1900s, and its coating shows streaks and blemishes from natural deterioration.
