Big Black River Station, a supply point in Mississippi, is the setting here, with wagons and sheds set out in the open ground that served the Union army's operations in the region. The stereograph was made in 1864, after the fall of Vicksburg in July 1863 had opened the Mississippi River to Union control and turned the surrounding country into a network of depots and supply routes. Taken with a wet collodion glass negative, the image was printed by the firm of Taylor & Huntington, whose stereo views of the war were widely sold to the public. Logistics like these wagons and sheds were the unglamorous backbone of the campaign, and the picture is worth a look for that reason.
