This stereograph shows the battlefield at the Big Black River in Mississippi, where Union and Confederate troops clashed on May 17, 1863. The fight was the last major obstacle on the road to Vicksburg. Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant drove Confederate troops under John C. Pemberton back across the river, and the defeated Confederates retreated into the city's defenses, which led to the siege that followed. Because the image is dated 1864, it was made after the fighting, when the ground had been cleared and the field could be photographed calmly. Its wet collodion glass negative and stereo format reflect the photographic methods of the period.
