Morris Brown College, the Atlanta school founded in 1881 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, is the focus here, with its ballplayers posed in a group alongside a boy and another man at a doorway. The picture comes from the album *Negro Life in Georgia, U.S.A.*, which W.E.B. Du Bois and his colleagues at Atlanta University assembled for the 1900 Paris Exposition to show Black American life beyond stereotype. Taken around 1899 or 1900, it presents Black students and athletes as educated, organized and modern. Collegiate baseball was becoming a common part of campus life in those years, and this group portrait preserves a glimpse of that social world.
