The caption card attached to this portrait links it to the Panama Canal Zone, which fits its date of about 1906. That November, Roosevelt traveled to the isthmus to inspect the canal under construction, becoming the first sitting president to leave the country. The print carries a copyright credit to H.C. White Co., a studio that made many formal portraits of public figures in this period. Its date places the sitter during his presidency, when the canal was among his most visible projects.
