Few charts of the period cover a whole stretch of coast as clearly as this 1882 map of the Fifth Lighthouse District, which spans the coasts of Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. Each light station carries its own symbol, so a navigator could tell at a glance what kind of light lay ahead, and the mileage scales allow distances between stations to be measured. The United States Lighthouse Board, created in 1852, divided the nation's coastline into numbered districts and issued working charts like this one to guide mariners. Today the map preserves a detailed record of how the Mid-Atlantic approaches were lit in the late nineteenth century.
