This 1882 chart shows the Fifth Lighthouse District, the stretch of coast and bay from Maryland through Virginia to North Carolina that the federal lighthouse service managed as one administrative unit. Its mileage scales and distinct symbols for different kinds of lights let a mariner judge distances and recognize each station's type at a glance. Such charts were working tools for the lighthouse service after its 1852 reorganization, when the Lighthouse Board divided the nation's coastline into districts to oversee construction, maintenance, and navigation aids. The map's detail reflects how much of the region's shipping depended on the Chesapeake and the Carolina sounds.
