Walter L. Main's circus advertised a ring of 63 performing horses in this color poster, which the Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, printed around 1899. Lithographed circus posters like this one were built to be seen from a distance on fences, walls and town streets, so the bold color and crowded horses were meant to draw crowds before the show arrived. Trained horse acts were a central draw of American traveling circuses of the period, and the large number of animals shown here reflects how the spectacle was sold to audiences.
