A pencil drawing on cream paper, dated January 1864, shows a herd of army horses in full flight, their bodies stretched low and their manes flying. The subject sets it apart from the other horse pictures on this board: rather than a single posed animal, the sheet captures the chaos of a mass of cavalry mounts moving at speed. During the Civil War, horses were essential to both sides, pulling artillery and supply wagons and carrying troopers, and the Union army bought and moved them in enormous numbers. Drawings like this one, made quickly in pencil, record that daily reality of camp and campaign life.
