Dead horses lie on the open ground near the clump of trees on Cemetery Ridge, the landmark at the center of the Union line where Pickett's charge broke on July 3, 1863. The drawing is dated July 4, the day after that assault, when the field still bore the wreckage of the fighting. Caisson and battery horses were among the most exposed casualties of the artillery bombardment that preceded the infantry attack, since their teams had to stand near the guns while shells fell. The sheet is one of the Civil War drawings in the Library of Congress, a gift of J.P. Morgan in 1919.
