Printed in brown ink, *The Monarch* is one of only ten impressions pulled before the lithographic stone was destroyed, which makes each surviving print a rare survivor. The record dates it to before 1893, a period when American artists were turning to lithography for both commercial work and fine-art prints, often in small editions like this one. The catalog numbers cited in the record, Rueppel 5 and Price 78, place it within published checklists of American printmaking, where limited, single-stone works like this are cataloged for comparison. The title alone suggests a dominant central subject, though the record does not describe its imagery in detail.
