Printed with its title in both English and German, this color lithograph bears the imprint of R.J. Stock of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a U.S. copyright registration number. Cincinnati had a large German-speaking population in the late nineteenth century, so a bilingual title would have reached readers in both languages. Moral allegories contrasting the roads to salvation and damnation were a familiar theme in popular religious imagery of the period, and inexpensive color lithographs made such messages affordable for ordinary homes.
