Where many posters in this series promote concerts, classes, or public health campaigns, this 1936 work announces a Philadelphia exhibition devoted to drawings, and its title says so directly. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed artists during the Depression, and its poster unit used silkscreen to produce bold, flat-color announcements for exhibitions and public events. Posters like this were pasted on walls and meant to be read quickly from a distance, so the simple lettering and color blocks are worth noticing. The piece also reflects a period when government-sponsored art reached street corners and community spaces, not only museums.
