Pittsburgh is the detail that sets this poster apart: its 1936 silkscreen announces an exhibition of watercolors sponsored by the Federal Art Project. The Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed artists during the Depression, and its poster division used silkscreen because it was relatively inexpensive and produced bold, flat color in multiple copies for display around town. Posters like this one advertised cultural events to ordinary residents, turning local art shows into public occasions. It is a useful record of how the New Deal brought painting to audiences who might not otherwise have visited a gallery.
